LAWBOSS – Uvalle Law Firm, PLLC has its San Antonio office in the Fountainhead Tower on I-10, and represents injured people across the city, the rest of Bexar County and the towns around it. Where a crash or fall happens decides three practical things: which police agency writes the report, which county a lawsuit is usually filed in, and, for crashes involving a public vehicle or public property, which government body must be notified and how fast. This page sets those out for each place we serve.

How the place of the crash changes a claim

  • The report. A crash with injury, death or a vehicle that cannot be driven safely must be reported at once to the local police inside a city, or to the sheriff outside one (Transportation Code section 550.026). The investigating officer files the CR-3 with TxDOT within 10 days (section 550.062).
  • The county of suit. A lawsuit is generally filed in the county where all or a substantial part of the events happened (Civil Practice and Remedies Code section 15.002).
  • Government claims. A city, a county or the state must receive notice within six months (section 101.101), and San Antonio’s charter requires written notice within 90 days. Other cities’ charters can set their own periods.

San Antonio

Most of our cases begin inside the city: on I-35, I-10, I-37, US 281, Loop 410 and Loop 1604, and on arterials such as Bandera Road, Culebra Road, Fredericksburg Road, Military Drive and Wurzbach Road. Crashes inside the city are investigated by SAPD. TxDOT’s 2025 figures list 167 people killed in crashes inside the City of San Antonio. Injury suits are filed in the Bexar County civil district courts at the courthouse at 100 Dolorosa downtown. Seriously injured people are taken to University Hospital in the South Texas Medical Center or to Brooke Army Medical Center at Fort Sam Houston, the city’s two Level I trauma centers. Claims against the City need written notice within 90 days under Section 150 of the City Charter; claims involving VIA buses, CPS Energy or SAWS go to those bodies separately.

Bexar County beyond the city

Bexar County had 46,744 reportable crashes in 2025, with 190 people killed and 759 suspected serious injuries, according to TxDOT’s Crashes and Injuries by County report. A crash in an unincorporated part of the county is reported to the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office. Wherever it happens in the county, a lawsuit is usually filed in the same civil district courts at 100 Dolorosa.

Converse, Universal City and Live Oak

These three cities sit northeast of San Antonio around Randolph Air Force Base, near I-35 and Loop 1604. Converse and Live Oak are in Bexar County. Universal City is in Bexar County with a small part in Guadalupe County, so on its eastern edge the county line can decide where a suit belongs. A crash inside any of them is reported to that city’s police department.

Leon Valley and Helotes

Both are Bexar County cities on the northwest side, joined by Bandera Road (SH 16). Leon Valley is an independent city surrounded entirely by San Antonio, so a crash on Bandera Road can fall inside Leon Valley or inside San Antonio a few blocks apart, with a different police agency writing the report and, for a claim about a city vehicle or city property, a different city to notify. Helotes lies farther out, on the far northwest side.

New Braunfels and Comal County

New Braunfels is the seat of Comal County, on I-35 between San Antonio and Austin, and part of the city lies in Guadalupe County. TxDOT counted 2,873 crashes in Comal County in 2025, with 15 people killed. A crash in the Comal County part of New Braunfels would usually be a Comal County case, filed in New Braunfels; one in the Guadalupe County part would usually be a Guadalupe County case.

Schertz

Schertz spans three counties. Most of the city is in Guadalupe County, its northern part is in Comal County and its southwest corner is in Bexar County. The I-35 corridor through Schertz carries heavy traffic between San Antonio and New Braunfels, and exactly where on that stretch a crash happened can decide which county’s courts hear the case.

Seguin and Guadalupe County

Seguin is the seat of Guadalupe County, east of San Antonio on I-10. TxDOT counted 3,121 crashes in Guadalupe County in 2025, with 16 people killed. A crash on I-10 between San Antonio and Seguin crosses from Bexar County into Guadalupe County, and the crash report’s location tells us which county applies.

Boerne and Kendall County

Boerne is the seat of Kendall County, northwest of San Antonio on I-10 in the Hill Country. TxDOT counted 844 crashes in Kendall County in 2025, with 14 people killed. A Kendall County case is usually filed in Boerne.

Legal information

This page is general information, not legal advice, and reading it does not create an attorney-client relationship. Crash figures are from TxDOT’s 2025 reports compiled as of April 7, 2026. The attorney responsible for this site and the firm’s office are named at the foot of every page.

Questions people ask

Do you take cases from New Braunfels, Boerne and Seguin?

Yes. We represent people from New Braunfels, Schertz, Converse, Universal City, Live Oak, Leon Valley, Helotes, Boerne and Seguin, as well as San Antonio and the rest of Bexar County.

My crash happened in another county. Where would my case be filed?

Generally in the county where all or a substantial part of the events happened. A crash in Seguin is usually a Guadalupe County case; one in Boerne, a Kendall County case.

Who writes the crash report in a suburb like Leon Valley or Live Oak?

Usually that city’s own police department, because a crash inside a city is reported to the local police. Outside any city it is the sheriff’s office.
